Idiom, Simile, and Metaphor Translation

1. Idioms 

Idioms are figurative phrases that are commonly used. Unlike similes and metaphors, there are no rules that define them, other than being figurative. You use idioms all the time without even noticing them. Examples (English - Indonesian):

- Beat around the bush. = Berbicara secara bertele-tele.

- Don't judge a book by its cover. = Jangan menilai sesuatu dari penampilan luarnya.

- Snake on the grass. = Musuh dalam selimut.

- Feel a bit under the weather. = Merasa tidak enak badan.

- Kill two birds with one stone. = Sekali dayung, dua tiga pulau terlampaui.

2. Similes 

Similes are comparisons between two unlike things using the word “like” or “as.” a simile connection is not the equivalent of an equal sign. Instead, it is meant to highlight a similarity and suggest that one thing is like another. This connect is an open, simple one. Examples (English - Indonesian):

- My love is like a red, red rose. = Cintaku seperti merah, mawar merah.

- You were as brave as a lion. = Kau berani bagaikan seekor singa.

- Your explanation is as clear as mud. - Penjelasanmu sejelas lumpur.

- She is as thin as a toothpick. = Dia sekurus tusuk gigi.

- As cold as ice. = Sedingin es.

3. Metaphor 

Metaphor is a figure of speech which makes an implicit, implied or hidden comparison between two things or objects that are poles apart from each other but have some characteristics common between them. In other words, a resemblance of two contradictory or different objects is made based on a single or some common characteristics. Examples (English - Indonesian):

- Sea of grief = Lautan kedukaan (How and where does one come across a sea that is filled not with water, but with grief?)

- He is the apple of my eye = Dia adalah kesayanganku (There is, of course, no real apple in a person's eye. The "apple" is someone beloved and held dear.)

-  Fade off to sleep = Tertidur (You don't actually fade, you simply go to sleep.)

- Bubbly personality = Kepribadian yang menyenangkan (A bubbly personality doesn't mean a person is bubbling over with anything, just that the person is cheerful.)

- Time is a thief = Waktu adalah pencuri (Time isn't really stealing anything, this metaphor just indicates that time passes quickly and our lives pass us by.)
